HISTORY

A guy named Doug Fisher founded National Extreme Wrestling in September of 1997, with four title belts, the NEW World Heavyweight Title, the NEW Intercontinental Title, the NEW Cruiserweight Title, and the NEW Tag Team Titles. The first Pay Per View Event, titled "Goldrush" saw "The Confessor" Rey Jeran win the World Title in a one night tournament, by beating "Malibu" Mike Madison. "Malibu" Mike Madison won the Intercontinental Title that night, as the rules of the tournament stated that whoever came second would receive that title. After that event, Doug Fisher, who decided he did not have enough time to run the NEW, handed it over to Marcus Williams. Bloodbath, who was in line for a Intercontinental Title shot, became commisioner of NEW, and therefore was not allowed to compete for the title.
Marcus decided the NEW was not even close to Extreme as it could have been. He created special gimmick matches to make it much more Extreme, such as the Late Night Bar Fight, in which the ring would be raised (those things aren't bolted down) and a large cage would be lowered, and bar stools, pool cues, beer bottles, etc, were placed in the cage. He also created the Hardware Store Match, where boxes of nails, rolls of barbed wire, 2x4's, and anything else you would find in a hardware store could be used. He also claims to have invented the Dumpster Match, which was later used by the World Wrestling Federation. He also invented special Battle Royals, such as the Ladder Battle Royal, and Table Battle Royal. In the Ladder Battle Royal, the winner would be the first person to climb the ladder and grab the belt, but in Battle Royal style, meaning 10 men or so would also be trying to do the same thing, but there are no eliminations. In the Table Battle Royal, the only way to eliminate a person was to put them through one of the tables set up. Tables were set up completely surrounding the ring.
Due to lack of interest, the NEW had to close in December of 1997.
A few months later, the National Wrestling Federation (NWF) decided to purchase the name of the NEW, and use it as a sub-federation. Marcus was still president, but had little power over the NEW. It closed again within a couple months.
In November of 1998, Marcus re-purchased the NEW name, and renamed it Universal Extreme Wrestling. The NEW World Heavyweight Title was "upgraded" to being the UEW Universal Heavyweight Title, and the IC title has been replaced by the UEW National Heavyweight Title. The NEW Cruiserweight Title has been replaced by the UEW Jr. Heavyweight Title.
On August 9th, 1999, the UEW's Final Card was posted, and the UEW officially closed forever.
